What's old is new again for VCU in 2017-18. While the Rams, coming off a seventh straight NCAA Tournament appearance, will have a new head coach, he's no stranger to the program.

Mike Rhoades, who spent five seasons as an assistant under Shaka Smart and helped lead the Rams to the Final Four in 2010-11, takes over in 2017-18. Rhoades assumes the reigns at VCU following a successful three-year stint at Rice, where, in 2016-17, he led the Owls to their first 20-win season since 2004.

In addition to a new coach, VCU will welcome eight new players to a roster that includes All-Atlantic 10 forward Justin Tillman (12.2 ppg, 8.7 rpg), and acrobatic point guard Johnny Williams (8.3 ppg, 3.1 apg). While Rhoades' rotation remains to be seen, Maine transfer Issac Vann, who sat out 2016-17, and graduate transfer Khris Lane (Longwood) are expected to make immediate impacts.

VCU will take on Marquette in the opening game of the 2017 Maui Jim Maui Invitational on Nov. 20, a 2:30 p.m. ET contest that will be televised by ESPN2.
