Quick LinksSan Diego State Basketball Homepage2014-15 San Diego State Schedule2014-15 San Deigo State RosterSan Diego State has high hopes and expectations for the 2014-15 campaign. The Aztecs are coming off their second NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in the last four seasons, their fifth straight NCAA berth, and won the Mountain West regular-season championship. In addition to returning three starters, SDSU welcomes two Division I transfers and a consensus top-15 recruiting class into the fold.
It is no wonder why many outside the program consider the Aztecs a preseason top-25 program just one year after finishing the campaign ranked 12th in the final Associated Press Top-25 and 13th in the USA Today Coaches Poll. It also does not hurt that the man leading the squad is two-time national coach of the year Steve Fisher.
The national championship coach is in his 16th season at the helm of the San Diego State program and what he has accomplished atop Montezuma Mesa is nothing short of impressive. Fisher's first Aztec team won just five games and two years later, SDSU was in the NCAA tournament after winning the MW Championship. He has guided San Diego State to nine consecutive postseason berths, nine straight 20-win seasons and a pair of 30-win efforts in the last four years.
This season, Fisher will rely on a bevy of juniors and seniors to lead the way, starting with Winston Shepard. The junior is back as the team's leading returner in scoring, rebounding and assists after averaging 11.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 2013-14.
Joining Shepard in the frontcourt is senior JJ O'Brien and junior Skylar Spencer. O'Brien is one of the smartest and steadiest players Fisher has coached. A season ago, O'Brien suffered a hand injury in the fifth game of the year, but battled through the pain to average 7.8 points and 4.7 rebounds. Spencer, meanwhile, is one of the top shot blockers in the country and set a school single-season record with 89 last year.
Two seniors are expected to see their roles increase in Dwayne Polee II and Aqeel Quinn. Polee II saw his production soar, averaging 10.8 points over his final 16 games. The 2014 MW Sixth Man of the Year enters the year as the team's second-leading scorer (8.5 ppg). Quinn was a reliable player in his first season as an Aztec, averaging 16.1 minutes at both guard positions and was a solid defender.
One of the Division I transfers expected to make an immediate impact is junior forward Angelo Chol. At 6-9, 225 pounds, Chol will give the Aztecs a second inside presence along with Spencer and a player who can step outside and make a jumper.
