In 1982, tiny NAIA school Chaminade shocked the sports world by defeating No. 1 Virginia and superstar Ralph Sampson. Gracious in defeat, Virginia’s coach, Terry Holland, encouraged Chaminade to create a holiday tournament on the islands.
By 1987, that spark found its permanent, iconic home at the Lahaina Civic Center, cementing the premier early-season tradition in college basketball.
