Matchup History
Seton Hall vs. NC State
Series Record: Tied, 3-3
Last Matchup: March 15, 2018 (Seton Hall 94, NC State 83)
Notes: Seton Hall and NC State will tip off the 2025 Southwest Maui Invitational. Led by alum Shaheen Holloway, Seton Hall is returning to the Lahaina Civic Center for the first time in over 20 years as the Pirates make their second Southwest Maui Invitational appearance (2001). Meanwhile, NC State is one of the three teams in this year's field making their debut in Maui. The Wolfpack enter the 2025-2026 season under first-year head coach Will Wade, who spent the past two seasons at McNeese State and guided the Cowboys to back-to-back Southland Conference regular season and tournament championships, highlighted by a first-round upset of Clemson in the 2025 NCAA Tournament. Wade is also making his second career Southwest Maui Invitational head coaching appearance, his first coming back in 2017 as head coach of LSU.
USC vs. Boise State
Series Record: First Meeting
Notes: Game two of the 2025 Southwest Maui Invitational features the first-ever matchup of USC and Boise State. Entering his second year at the helm of USC, Eric Musselman will lead the Trojans in their third appearance at the Southwest Maui Invitational (1999, 2012), where they've gone 3-4. This year marks Boise State's first Tournament appearance. The Broncos have appeared in the NCAA Tournament in three of the last four years under the tutelage of Leon Rice, the winningest coach in program history. Both Musselman and Rice have prior coaching experience in Maui. Musselman was head coach during Arkansas' last Tournament appearance (2022), while Rice served as an assistant for three of Gonzaga's trips to Maui (2002, 2005, 2009), highlighted by their 2009 championship overtime win over Cincinnati.
Washington State vs. Chaminade
Series Record: First Meeting
Notes: Game three of day one pits the Washington State Cougars, who are making their first-ever Southwest Maui Invitational appearance, against Tournament host Chaminade, who return to the field for the 38th time. Washington State's second-year head coach David Riley will look to build on a productive inaugural campaign that saw the Cougars earn a spot in the College Basketball Crown. This year marks Chaminade Head Coach Eric Bovaird's 11th Southwest Maui Invitational. Entering his 15th year as head coach of the Silverswords, Bovaird picked up his 200th career win last season, a total that only trails the late Chaminade Hall of Fame Head Coach Merv Lopes, who guided Chaminade in their historic upset of No. 1 ranked Virginia in 1982, a game that
inspired the creation of the Southwest Maui Invitational.
Arizona State vs. Texas
Series Record: Texas leads 4-1
Last Matchup: March 20, 2014 (Texas 87, Arizona State 85)
Notes: The fourth and final game of day one features a battle of two previous Southwest Maui Invitational champions in Arizona State (1994) and Texas (2020). Though he is making his Maui head coaching debut in Arizona State's sixth Southwest Maui Invitational appearance (1991, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2007), Sun Devils Head Coach Bobby Hurley is no stranger to the Lahaina Civic Center as he captured co-MVP honors at the 1992 Tournament. He'll become just the third head coach to lead a team in Maui after winning the Tournament MVP during their playing career, joining Penny Hardaway (1992; 2024), who he shared MVP honors with, and Steve Wojciechowski (1997; 2017).
2025 marks Texas' sixth time competing in the Southwest Maui Invitational (1993, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2020), compiling a 10–5 record in those appearances, including winning the 2020 Tournament. The Longhorns, who've played in 23 of the last 26 NCAA Tournaments, are led by first-year head coach Sean Miller, who has eight trips to the Sweet 16 and four appearances in the Elite Eight to his name. Miller is also familiar with Maui Magic, having coached Arizona in three Southwest Maui Invitationals (2009, 2014, 2018), highlighted by the Wildcats' championship in 2014.
About the Southwest Maui Invitational
In December 1982, then No. 1 ranked Virginia, led by National College Player of the Year Ralph Sampson, played little-known NAIA Chaminade University in Honolulu while on the way back from a trip to Tokyo. The Silverswords stunned Virginia 77-72 in one of the greatest upsets in college basketball history. Two years later, in 1984,
Chaminade University hosted the first
Southwest Maui Invitational proven to be the premier early-season college basketball tournament for more than 40 years running. Each year, the Southwest Maui Invitational attracts the top programs, best-known coaches, and most outstanding players to compete in an exciting atmosphere at the
Lahaina Civic Center near the beautiful beaches of
Maui.
