Gonzaga holds off UCLA 69-65 in final game of the 2023 Allstate Maui Invitational

HONOLULU - Anton Watson was unstoppable in the fifth-place match-up at the Allstate Maui Invitational, scoring a career-high 32 points and helping Gonzaga defeat UCLA for the fourth time in four seasons.

The Bulldogs were up by 13 points in the first half. The Bruins made a late run in the second half, with Lazar Stefanovic netting a three-pointer in the final minute of the game to bring the score to 66-63. Gonzaga's Ben Gregg then hit a critical free throw with just 21 seconds left to put the game away.

Watson was dominant, shooting 14 of 15 from the field and 3 for 3 from beyond the arc, and tallying seven rebounds. Stefanovic and Sebastian Mack both had 16 points to lead the Bruins.

The last time Gonzaga and UCLA faced off was in the Sweet 16 earlier this year, which was another close game, with the Bulldogs beating the Bruins 79-76. They went on the lose to UConn, the eventual national champions, in the Elite Eight.

Gonzaga will return to McCarthey Athletic Center to host CSU Bakersfield on Tuesday. UCLA is facing UC Riverside on Thursday at Pauley Pavillion.
