HONOLULU – The 2023 Allstate Maui Invitational championship game was a chaotic battle between the Purdue Boilermakers and Marquette Golden Eagles, with head coach Matt Painter's squad taking home its first Maui Invitational title in program history.
Purdue and Marquette traded buckets during the initial 10 minutes of the opening frame, but the Boilermakers were able to catch fire from downtown shortly after. Purdue outscored the Golden Eagles 22-13 in the final nine minutes of the first half. PU took advantage of MU's star forward Oso Ighodaro picking up his second foul, which left Zach Edey at an advantage on the low block. The senior center for the Boilermakers had 13 points and six rebounds in the first half.
Marquette opened the second half making six of its first seven shots, trimming Purdue's lead to seven at the 15:29 mark. The Golden Eagles continued their strong stretch to start the second frame, going on a 6-0 run and cutting Purdue's lead to five (61-56) at the 11:29 mark.
MU shortened PU's lead to as low as one, but the Boilermakers held strong. Edey hit a pair of two critical free throws after securing an offensive rebound that pushed Purdue's lead back to three with less than 10 seconds left. Marquette had a chance to send the game to overtime with a desperation three as time expired, but came up short. Edey was named the Tournament's MVP.
Purdue will return to West Lafayette, Ind., for a home game against Texas Southern on Tuesday. Marquette will also return home to Milwaukee and play Tuesday against Southern.
