Marquette Upsets Kansas to Reach Championship

HONOLULU – The Marquette Golden Eagles controlled the second semifinal of the 2023 Allstate Maui Invitational right from the opening tip against the Kansas Jayhawks.

After surrendering the first basket of the game and going down 0-2, the Golden Eagles answered with a three-pointer from junior forward Kam Jones and never trailed again. MU held the high-flying KU offense to just 28 points in the first half, which was a season-low for the Jayhawks in the opening 20 minutes. In addition, Kansas' 59 total points was a season-low and the first time that head coach Bill Self's team failed to score at least 83 points in a game during the team's current campaign.

Golden Eagles' senior forward Oso Ighodaro led the way for MU, dropping 21 points on 9-15 shooting while snatching a team-high nine rebounds. He shut down Jayhawks' star center Hunter Dickinson, who scored just 13 points. He had been averaging nearly 25 points per game prior to Tuesday's loss.

Marquette rolls on to the 2023 Allstate Maui Invitational championship game to face the Purdue Boilermakers, who defeated the Tennessee Volunteers in the other semifinal. The title game will be broadcast on ESPN at noon HT / 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday. The Jayhawks and Volunteers will battle it out for third place at 9:30 a.m. HT / 2:30 p.m. ET on ESPN as well.
