HONOLULU - Gonzaga did not allow Syracuse to make a second half comeback and came away victorious in the fifth game of the 2023 Allstate Maui Invitational.
Graham Ike's game-opening layup kicked off an early 7-0 run for the Bulldogs. Quick ball movement by Gonzaga made it difficult for Syracuse to get momentum going in the first half, as the Bulldogs shot 48.6% from the floor and recorded 26 rebounds (compared to the Orange who shot 10-35 and snatched 17 rebounds).
Syracuse sophomore Judah Mintz showed up at the start of the second period ready to put up some points on the board for SU. Mintz scored in the paint seconds after the start of the half and made a driving layup off a turnover just over a minute later. Syracuse scored 16 points in the paint during the first 10 minutes of the second period and after a dunk from Maliq Brown, the Orange brought a 10-point deficit down to just six. Shortly after, Nolan Hickman and Ben Gregg's back-to-back three-pointers gave the Bulldogs a more comfortable lead, slowing down Syracuse's momentum. The Bulldogs finished the game with a 76-57 victory over the Orange.
Gonzaga will play the winner of UCLA vs. Chaminade on Wednesday at 7 p.m. HT/ midnight ET for its third game of the Allstate Maui Invitational. Syracuse will take on either UCLA or Chaminade on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. HT/ 9:30 p.m. ET for its third game.
