MAUI, Hawaii (Nov. 21, 2022) — Arthur Kalmura scored 18 points, Trey Alexander added 17, and Creighton opened the Maui Invitational with a 76-65 victory over Texas Tech on Monday.
Creighton (5-0) started slow but used timely three-point shooting to earn a spot in Tuesday's semifinal against the winner of Arkansas vs. Louisville.
In a fast paced first half, Texas Tech (3-1) got off to a strong start thanks to their points in the paint (20) and swarming defense, forcing 13 Bluejays turnovers. After trailing 9-2, Creighton found their footing with a 10-0 run to take their first lead of the game. Baylor Scheierman knocked in 3 3-pointers to set up a 31-31 tie at halftime.
Creighton dictated the style of the play in the second half, using transition offense and a 16-7 run out of the break to stretch the lead 47-38. Daniel Batcho had 17 points for Texas Tech, but second half adjustments of Creighton were too much to overcome.
Additional game notes: Creighton's Ryan Kalkbrenner left the game late in the first half with a right foot injury but did return to start the second half. Kalkbrenner seemed to reinjure the same foot again with just a few minutes left in the game but was able to finish.
Texas Tech's Daniel Batcho appeared to be shaken up a bit late in the second half with what appeared to be cramping (2:22) He was helped off the floor and did not return.
