The Texas Longhorns were met by a fierce showing from the Davidson Wildcats in the first game of the 2020 Camping World Maui Invitational. While the Longhorns won the battle 78-76, the Wildcats never trailed by more than seven points throughout the game.
Davidson got off to a strong start, making ten of their first 13 field goals and harnessing a 22-16 lead in the first half. Sam Mennenga led the Wildcats with 17 points and five rebounds.
Texas woke up defensively later on in the first half, with Davidson making just four of their final 12 shots. Junior Courtney Ramey led the Longhorns with 14 points, and secured a pivotal lead over Davidson with just 20 seconds remaining in the game.
Head coach Bob McKillop didn't lose sight of a potential win, drawing up a play in the final seconds that found Mennenga taking the final shot from the left wing. The missed shot secured the win for the Longhorns, and a place on the winning side of the Maui Invitational bracket.
Texas will play Indiana in Game 5 of the Tournament on Dec. 1 at 1:30 pm ET.
Davidson will play Providence in Game 7 of the Tournament on Dec. 1 at 7 pm ET.
