With the conclusion of the 2016-17 college basketball season, the focus has already shifted to what the 2017-18 campaign will have in store.
For the Maui Jim Maui Invitational, four teams from the 2017 field were mentioned by several outlets in their "Way Too Early" previews for next season, including Michigan, Notre Dame and Wichita State. VCU was also mentioned just outside of ESPN's top 25.
The Shockers are a consensus top-10 squad, and appear as high as
No. 5 by CBS Sports. Conference realignment rumors have been tied to Wichita State recently, but Gary Parrish says the Shockers talent would win in any league.
"Every relevant player from a Wichita State team that won 31 games and finished eighth at KenPom should be back -- most notably Markis McDuffie and Landry Shamet," Parrish writes. "So Wichita State will be the favorite in whatever league it plays in. Gregg Marshall's team can win the MVC or the American. Doesn't matter."
Notre Dame, meanwhile is ranked as high as
No. 7 by ESPN. Eamonn Brennan says that even with the departures of key senior leadership, head coach Mike Brey always has his team ready to compete for championships.
"First things first: The Fighting Irish are losing two key seniors, Steve Vasturia and V.J. Beachem, both of whom stretched the floor and slashed to the rim and key reasons why Notre Dame's four-out offense worked so well all season," Brennan writes. "Thing is? Notre Dame always loses key seniors. Two years ago, it was Jerian Grant and Pat Connaughton; last year, it was Zach Auguste and Demetrius Jackson. Mike Brey keeps putting really good teams on the floor. Most important, Bonzie Colson -- a revelation as a 6-foot-5, long-armed, small-ball "center" who does a quality poor man's Draymond Green impression -- was only a junior. He'll be back, and any offense built around him -- and engineered by Brey -- is bound to put points on the board."
Michigan put together an incredible run to the Big Ten Tournament championship and the Sweet 16 this season. Some key departures will hurt, but the emergence of sophomore stars Mo Wagner and D.J. Wilson, along with an influx of new talent, will have John Beilein's team in contention next year.
ESPN ranks them 22nd and Seth Davis of
Sports Illustrated has the Wolverines at No. 23.
"Another year of improvement by sophomore forwards Moritz Wagner and D.J. Wilson should help overcome the departures of senior guards Derrick Walton and Zak Irvin," Davis said.
The 2017 field features some of the most successful programs of this decade. Since the 2010-11 season, the field has combined for 33 total NCAA Tournament appearances, 11 Sweet 16 berths, four Elite Eights and three Final Fours, while Michigan, Notre Dame, VCU and Wichita State rank among the top 30 nationally in wins. In total, the teams of the 2017 Maui Jim Maui Invitational have combined for 334 all-time postseason bids.
