Wyking Jones, who boasts nearly 15 years of collegiate coaching experience, has been named the head coach of the Cal men's basketball team, the school announced on Friday afternoon.
Jones has spent the last two seasons as an assistant before being elevated to the head coaching role after the departure of Cuonzo Martin. In his time in Berkeley, the Bears earned two postseason berths and he coached Cal big men Jaylen Brown and Ivan Rabb to multiple Pac-12 Conference honors, while Brown was the No. 3 overall pick the 2016 NBA Draft.
Jones has a track record of success not only at Cal, but in his previous stops as an assistant coach. Before arriving at Cal, he served under Rick Pitino at Louisville from 2011-2015, where the program enjoyed incredible success. The Cardinals went 123-30, won the 2013 NCAA Championship, advanced to the 2012 Final Four, earned an Elite Eight berth in 2015 and a spot in the Sweet 16 in 2014. He also served under current UCLA coach Steve Alford while at New Mexico from 2009-2011, helping the program to 52 wins over two seasons.
"I am very excited to announce Wyking Jones as our next men's basketball coach at Cal," Director of Athletics Mike Williams said in a statement. "We conducted a thorough search, looking near and far and talking to people all around the country. We consulted with several Cal basketball alumni, as well as a multiple NBA and college coaches – some of the most experienced basketball minds in the game. Ultimately, we came back to where we started and found what we wanted right here in Berkeley."
"I am extremely excited to be taking over at Cal as the new men's basketball head coach," Jones said in a statement. "To be able to lead this incredible group of men is a dream come true for me. When I left Louisville and decided to come home to California, I was stepping out on faith, but I knew in my heart this was where I knew I needed to be. Coach Martin left an unbelievable foundation for the program and we will work hard to continue to elevate Cal basketball. I want fans to know that I'm excited to coach these guys, not only for what they can do on the court but to continue to cultivate them as young men."
The Bears are set to play in the 2017 Maui Jim Maui Invitational and are one of six teams in next year's field to earn postseason berths.
