Southwest Maui Invitational

Dayton drive

General

Life is Sweet for Dayton and San Diego State

Dayton and San Diego State both advance to the Sweet 16

The story of the NCAA Tournament is quickly becoming the Dayton Flyers, who have now upset two of the perennial powers in college basketball to advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1984. Dayton's latest victim was 3-seed Syracuse, the reigning EA SPORTS Maui Invitational champions, as they defeated the Orange 55-53.

Both teams were part of the field in Maui this season, though they did not meet as Dayton was one point shy of playing the Orange in the championship game.

Junior guard Jordan Sibert hit an important 3-pointer with 47.7 seconds left to give the Flyers a three-point lead. Dyshawn Pierre added 14 points, including three free throws in the final 30 seconds to seal the victory.

Dayton will play in the Regional Semifinals on Thursday against either Kansas or Stanford.

A Sweet Saturday For San Diego State
Senior guard Xavier Thames, the Mountain West Player of the Year, put his team on his back and scored 30 points, leading San Diego State to its second Sweet 16 appearance in school history. The Aztecs defeated  North Dakota State 63-44.

Not only does the win propel San Diego State to the Sweet 16, but it also brings them back home. They will play on Thursday in the West Regional held in Anaheim, less than 100 miles from campus.

The Aztecs will await the winner of Sunday's matchup between Arizona and Gonzaga. The Wildcats will join San Diego State in Maui next season, while Gonzaga played in the Tournament earlier this year.

Pitt Falls To Top Overall Seed
Unfortunately, Pittsburgh ran into a machine that had no intentions of slowing down as they fell to Florida, the No. 1 overall seed in the Tournament, 61-45. Senior guard/forward Lamar Patterson had eight points and eight rebounds in his final collegiate contest.

The Panthers finished the season 26-10 and fifth in the ACC, their first in the conference. They will head to Maui in November 2014.
