Bobby Cremins to join 2012 Hoops Clinics

Former Georgia Tech coach Bobby Cremins returns to Hawaii for Coaches Clinics

The EA SPORTS Maui Invitational Hosted by Chaminade today announced that former Division I college basketball coach Bobby Cremins will be joining the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational for the 2012 edition of the adidas Hoops Clinics presented by Hawaiian Airlines. Along with EA SPORTS Maui Invitational Tournament Chairman David Odom, Chaminade men's basketball coach Eric Bovaird and women's basketball coach Bobby Keanin, Cremins will lead two coaches clinics.

"I've been to Hawaii several times, and all of my stays have been fantastic," Cremins said. "It's my pleasure to be part of the premier early-season college basketball tournament and giving back to the people of Hawaii through these clinics."

Cremins spent 31 seasons as a college basketball head coach at three different schools: Appalachian State (1975-1981), Georgia Tech (1981-2000) and College of Charleston (2006-2012). While at Georgia Tech, where Cremins is the winningest coach in program history, he was named the ACC Coach of the Year three times (1983, 1985 and 1996) and the Naismith College Coach of the Year in 1990. At College of Charleston, Cremins led the Cougars to four 20-win campaigns in his first five years and in 2011 enjoyed a memorable run to the NIT Quarterfinals while claiming the school's first Southern Conference regular-season championship title.

Odom is a former head coach at Wake Forest and South Carolina. At Wake Forest, he coached two-time NBA MVP and four-time NBA Champion Tim Duncan, and at South Carolina he led the Gamecocks to back-to-back NIT Championships in 2005 and 2006.

Bovaird is in his second year as the Chaminade University Men's Basketball Head Coach. Bovaird went 11-14 in his first year at the helm of the Silverswords program. Prior to taking over at Chaminade, he served as the Assistant Coach at West Liberty University in West Virginia. His teams recorded a 175-40 won-loss record - one of the top records in the NCAA Division II level over the past five years. West Liberty finished the 2010-2011 season ranked No. 1 nationally, with their lone loss coming to BYU-Hawaii in the Final Four. West Liberty led the nation in scoring in six of the last seven years and was ranked as a top-20 teams nationally in five of the past six years. Keanini is going into his third year leading the Chaminade's women's program after a stellar high school coaching career at Roosevelt High School on Oahu. Keanini's teams won numerous league and conference championships and a Division II state championship in 2004.

The coaches clinics target high school, middle school and community basketball coaches and are free of change. Some of the topics that will be discussed are using pressure defense to force an up-tempo game and taking a fast break and turning it into secondary offense.

The adidas Hoops Clinics presented by Hawaiian Airlines also features three kids clinics. The first clinic took place Saturday, Oct. 6 in Honolulu, and there are two more over the next month.  Working with the Boys & Girls Club of Maui and the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii, the kids clinics offer basketball skills programs to deserving kids throughout the islands in clinics designed to share the joy of the game of basketball while supporting the Maui Food Bank and Hawaii Food Bank. The coaches clinics provide an educational opportunity for local island basketball coaches – youth and high school levels – to learn coaching skills, playing techniques and overall management styles.

Special thanks to the various clinic sponsors, including Maui Visitors Bureau, County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation, Hawaii Tourism Authority, adidas, Hawaiian Airlines, HMSA, FoodLand and Gatorade.
