The end of the 2015-16 college basketball season might be etched in sports lore for quite some time, but it's never too early to take a look ahead to the 2016-17 campaign. Several media outlets released "Way Too Early Top-25s" for the coming season following the NCAA Championship game, and four 2016 Maui Jim Maui Invitational teams are expected be among the top 20 once the new year begins.
After enduring a heartbreaking defeat in Monday's national championship game, North Carolina is projected as high as No. 4 by The Sporting News and is among the top 10 in every 2016-17 ranking. Despite losing senior leaders Marcus Paige and Brice Johnson, the Tar Heels are projected to return six of their eight leading scorers from this past season and welcomes a top 10 recruiting class to Chapel Hill next season.
Oregon, which should return five of its top seven scorers and will welcome a highly rated recruiting class, is projected as high as fourth by numerous outlets, including USA Today, entering the 2016-17 campaign. The Ducks earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Elite Eight this past season.
Wisconsin is slated to return every key component from its team that advanced to the Sweet 16 this past season. The Badgers are projected as a top-10 team by numerous outlets, and no lower than No. 17, after finishing among the top four in the Big Ten standings for the 16th straight season a year ago.
UConn is widely considered a top-20 squad entering the 2016-17 campaign, and welcomes one of the nation's best recruiting classes to Storrs next year. The Huskies, who won the American Athletic Conference Tournament title, fell to the top overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, Kansas, in the second round.
The 2016 Maui Jim Maui Invitational, scheduled for Nov. 21-23, will feature traditional powers and perennial championship contenders. Georgetown, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Tennessee, UConn and Wisconsin will join host Chaminade for the 33rd annual event. All-Tournament Travel Packages are now on sale at
