UCLA took the lead for good with 3:23 remaining in the game and then held off UNLV down the stretch for a 77-75 victory in the final game of day one in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational. The Bruins missed its first free throw of the game and proceeded to reel off 23 in a row to finish with an impressive 95.8 percent (23-for-24) as a team. Junior Bryce Alford, who missed the opening free throw, came back to lead the team in scoring. Both Alford and sophomore Thomas Welsh put up 20 points on the night. Sophomore Patrick McCaw also tallied 20 for the Runnin' Rebels.
UNLV freshman Stephen Zimmerman Jr. led all rebounders and tallied a double-double with 13 boards to go along with 10 points.
UCLA (3-1) will head to the winners' bracket and take on Kansas on Tuesday evening at 5 p.m. (HST). UNLV (3-1) will take the floor against tournament host Chaminade at 11:30am (HST).
