2016 Maui Invitational Championship Field Revealed

General Information: The Maui Jim Maui Invitational unveiled the Championship Round for the 2016 Tournament, showcasing a field of national champions and iconic programs that will compete for the Wayne Duke Championship Trophy. From Nov. 21-23, the famed Lahaina Civic Center will play host to Chaminade, Connecticut, Georgetown, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Tennessee and Wisconsin.
 
Perennial Powers:  The 2016 field has combined for 14 national championships, including six squads that have won at least one NCAA title, and 39 Final Four appearances and 194 NCAA Tournament berths. In 2014, both Connecticut and Wisconsin advanced to the Final Four, with the Huskies claiming their fourth national championship, while the Badgers also advanced to the 2015 national championship game. Since 1999, the teams have combined for 14 trips to the Final Four and have won six national championships. Four teams, UConn in 2010-11, North Carolina in 2004-05 and 2008-09, and Michigan in 1988-89, started their seasons by winning the Maui Jim Maui Invitational and ended the year as NCAA Champions.

Connecticut
  • UConn won the 2014 NCAA Championship as a No. 7 seed, the lowest seeded team to win the national title since No. 8 Villanova in 1985
  • The Huskies have claimed four national championships all-time, all coming since 1999
  • They hold an 8-1 all-time record in the Maui Invitational in three previous trips to Maui (2000, 2005 and 2010), winning the Tournament in their last two appearances
  • Connecticut is the only team to win the Maui Invitational, its conference tournament and the NCAA Championship in the same season
  • The program claims 31 NCAA Tournaments appearances, five Final Four berths and 35 conference championships
 
Georgetown
  • Georgetown has appeared in the postseason in each of the last 10 seasons, including seven NCAA Tournament berths and a Final Four appearance since 2006
  • The Hoyas have made two previous trips to the Maui Invitational, carrying a 4-3 record after appearances in 1999 and 2011
  • They claim 29 NCAA Tournament appearances and 17 conference championships all time in program history
  • They are projected to finish second in the Big East by the conference's coaches this season, led by Preseason Player of the Year D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera
 
North Carolina
  • North Carolina is the third-winningest team in NCAA history with more than 2,100 triumphs
  • The Tar Heels are winners of five NCAA Championships and 46 conference titles, and appeared in 45 NCAA Tournaments
  • They will make their seventh Maui Invitational appearance (1989, 1995, 1999, 2004, 2008 and 2012)
  • The program owns a 16-3 all-time Tournament record, tied for the most wins of any program in tournament history
 
Oklahoma State
  • Oklahoma State has appeared in four of the last six NCAA Tournaments, including the last two seasons
  • The Cowboys have won 20 or more games in five of the last six seasons
  • They will make their second all-time appearance in the Maui Invitational, finishing fourth in the their only other trip to Maui in 2007
  • Advanced to six Final Fours and 26 NCAA Tournaments, and have claimed 21 conference titles
 
Oregon
  • Head Coach Dana Altman was named the 2013 National Jim Phelan Coach of the Year after helping Oregon to the 2013 Pac-12 Tournament Championship
  • He carries more than 500 wins in his 26-year career
  • Oregon has won 20 or more games for four consecutive seasons, a feat achieved just once in program history (1935-36 through 1938-39 seasons)
  • The Ducks will make their second appearance at the Maui Invitational, having earned a fourth-place finish in 2008
  • Oregon has appeared in 12 NCAA Tournaments, including one national championship, and have claimed seven conference championships
 
Tennessee
  • Tennessee advanced to the Sweet 16 and won 24 games in 2014
  • The Volunteers have won 10 or more conference games in seven of the last eight seasons
  • They will make their third all-time appearance at the Maui Invitational, going 3-4 in their previous trips to Maui in 2004 and 2011
  • Has claimed 13 conference regular season or tournament titles and appeared in 20 NCAA Tournaments in program history
 
Wisconsin
  • Won 30 games last year en route to the Final Four, marking the 11th time in 13 years the teams has won 20 or more games in a season
  • Wisconsin has finished no worse than fourth in the Big Ten standings in each of the last 13 seasons
  • The Badgers will make their third all-time appearance in the Maui Invitational, combining for a 3-3 mark in the 1995 and 2009 events
  • Wisconsin has won 19 Big Ten regular season or tournament championships and appeared in 20 NCAA Tournaments, including every year since 1999
 
Chaminade
  • The Silverswords own seven all-time victories in the Tournament, knocking off the likes of Texas, Oklahoma, Stanford and Villanova
  • Last season, Chaminade advanced to its second straight NCAA Division II Tournament after winning the PacWest Tournament title as the No. 5 seed
  • The Silverswords defeated three higher-seeded teams to secure a second-consecutive NCAA Tournament bid for the first time in school history
  • Two Silverswords have won Tournament MVP honors – Patrick Langlois in 1984 and George Gilmore in 1991
